Mentally Disordered Offenders: UK

The guidance on the Criminal Justice System and Mentally Disordered Offenders published by Rethink has some useful backgroung material for practitioners.

The Crown Prosecution Service’s mentally disordered offenders site provides information on CPS policy in dealing with cases in which the defendant has a mental disorder.

The Dangerous People with Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) Programme is run by the Home Office, Department of Health, Prison Service and NHS. The Programme supports public protection via the development of pilot treatment services for dangerous offenders whose offending is linked to severe personality disorder. The programme focuses on people who have committed a violent and/or sexual crime and have been detained under the criminal justice system or current mental health legislation.

Diversion Of Mentally Disordered Offenders: Indications From A Special Hospital  is a study by Phil Woods & Tom Mason undertaken within Ashworth Hospital, which caters for patients treated  under conditions of high security due to their dangerous, violent and/or criminal propensities.

The Mental Health Foundation's website provides information about mental health issues and also acts as a gateway to some of the other mental health resources, both UK and international.

The Mental Health Primary Care in Prison website offers a superb practitioner’s guide to mental ill health in adults and adolescents in prison and young offender institutions.

Mind is a leading mental health charity in England and Wales. They advance the views of people with mental health problems, challenge discrimination, promote inclusion, and influence policy.

The National Confidential Inquiry Into Suicide & Homicide By People With Mental Illness collects data from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Inquiry is conducted in association with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Revolving Doors is a leading charity concerned with mental health and criminal justice. They operate schemes in police stations, prisons and courts to support people who have 'fallen through the net' of mainstream services.

Rethink is a prominent UK mental illness charity (previously named The National Schizophrenia Fellowship) dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by severe mental illness

The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health (SCMH) is a charity working to improve the quality of life for people with severe mental health problems. It aims to influence policy and encourage good practice. SCMH is affiliated to King's College, London.
